Co-hosted by the UMSU Queer +Wom*n’s Departments, ‘Rad Sex & Consent Week‘ is a week of radically re-thinking and re-learning sex education, including workshops, facilitated discussions and other events centered around making sex safer, more respectful and more fun for ourselves and others. We aim to cater to and celebrate diverse sexualities while presenting a range of ideas that educate and promote sexual health, consent and mutually satisfying sex!
A lot of us get a really limited sexual education, if any. The sex education we do receive is full of misinformation. It often promotes a narrow, exclusive idea of sexuality, one that lacks emphasis on the navigation of respectful relationships that are inclusive of a range of different sexualities and desires. Ideas around sex and our bodies are so often used to make us feel insecure, inadequate, or unworthy. We want to challenge these ideas and we want students to feel knowledgeable and confident about our sex lives and our bodies.
Consent is one of the central ideas of this event. What is consent? It means that our needs and desires should be respected – whether in regards to sex or anything else. No one should ever be pressured into sexual activity they are not comfortable with. Enthusiastic consent is more then just avoiding the No, it’s about seeking the Yesyesyesyes.
